The total solar eclipse will occur tonight, the first time the total solar eclipse has occurred in Alaska since 1976. On Nov. 21 and 22, the moon will pass within a few degrees of Earth’s horizon, and during the eclipse the moon will appear as a bright dot on the sun.
The moon will then move along Earth’s equator, and the time at which you will see the moon closest to the sun will be dependent on which side of Earth you’re on. So if you’re on the western side, the moon will move toward the sun at approximately 4 p.m. Eastern Time. If you’re on the eastern side, you’ll see the moon closest to the sun at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.
The moon moves closer to the sun every year, and this year will be no exception. It might be the first time in two years that the moon will pass within 12% of Earths surface. The first time will be in early August, but we don’t know what time of day it will occur.
So youre probably wondering, which side are you on? Well, that’s a fun thought. Because the moon also moves closer to the sun every year, the two will eventually come into alignment. This year, that alignment will occur sometime during the first quarter of September. So if youre on a side of the world and are wondering which side your on, you better be by then, because the moon will go by your direction of travel about that same time period.
In a twist, if you’re not sure which side you are on, you can switch your location by simply using your phone’s location app for an hour or so, then go back and change sides. It’s hard to tell the difference between a moon that is nearly eclipsed and one that is just slightly eclipsed. In either case, you can always go back and re-establish your current location.
This eclipse happens to fall in the very same time period as the upcoming big solar eclipse. It’s a great opportunity to go to a lunar eclipse viewing spot in Alaska and see what the big event will look like.
