One of the most effective self-awareness techniques that we saw from our readers was the one that was called “no thoughts, no distractions”. It is a simple step to take every once in a while and ask yourself, “What is the best thing that I could be doing right now in the most efficient way?” And then to answer the question, it’s usually a simple “not thinking about it”.

I’ve also been asked about this technique by people who believe that the world is a giant game of chess, but that’s not the case at all. Instead, most of us are engaged in activities we find entertaining, fun, worthwhile, or even fun. We don’t really spend a lot of time thinking about why, which makes it easier to be present and engaged. To those of us who are not chess players, the best example of this is the simple technique of “walking away.

This is such a basic and universal human behavior that even the world of chess is often used for entertainment (like how you have to do the same thing to win). But walking away is a different skill and requires different skills. For example, once you are walking away, you will no longer be engaged in the game of chess.
