The elephant trunk nebula is a very large star with a long tail that is located roughly 250 light years from Earth. It is thought to be a planet like our own, and in fact, as the image below suggests, we would have to be the only living thing in the universe, considering the vastness of space and the vastness of time, to have ever been here.
This is because the tail is being bent by the gravity of a planet-sized body, so we are now looking into a galaxy that is just about one light year across.
I’ve always thought of it as being like an elephant trunk in space, so I’m surprised to see how big it is even with a tail that is being bent. The implications are huge. We are now looking into a galaxy that is just about one light year across.
One of the many new things that Arkane is doing in Deathloop is adding some new features on the game’s side (notably, the game’s own pet character, the elephant trunk nebula). I can’t say what the elephant trunk nebula does, but I will say that it has a very distinctive appearance. The elephant trunk nebula is a red and blue creature that lives in a galaxy that is just about one light year across.
As you can imagine, there are a lot of people who are very excited about the idea of this being a game. The elephant trunk nebula is the subject of the recently released book ‘The Elephant Tailed Galaxy’ by David A. Wheeler. I was fortunate enough to participate in a book signing at Barnes and Noble, and got to meet David.
When I asked him what inspired his book, he said, “The idea of being able to go into space and see this galaxy from the outside was just incredible. Because when you look out from Earth, it looks like a galaxy. It was amazing to see the galaxy from the outside and see it from the inside. It was a real treat.
The book is available now. The idea that you’re able to see a galaxy from the outside while you’re in the middle of a space-time bubble is a fascinating one, and I look forward to reading more about it.
