The space program began this way. As every generation now knows, the first humans to leave Earth were not looking for distant planets, but to leave our planet, our solar system, for the first time.

This was around the time when the first Europeans were landing on the shores of the Americas. Columbus’s map was of the world’s east coast, which he thought was the way to England.
As a person who spends a lot of time thinking about the world (and in particular, our planet), I am very interested in how humans will be able to leave our solar system and travel to an exoplanet. As I have written in the past, I see this as a key to understanding the future of our species.
